18 SMARTBoard Musical Adventures & Assessments

This collection of 18 SMARTBoard Musical Adventures & Assessments  is designed to create fun, interactive assessment opportunities for children in grades 2 – 4.

Giving assessments are always challenging in my music classroom!  Perfect for the fall, with its Leaf-themed pages, this Notebook 11 file  will also work well as an assessment anytime during the school year. Even if you don’t use it for an assessment, it will provide 18 SMARTBoard Musical Adventures & Assessments your students will enjoy.

There are 18 different musical assessment pages.

Many of the pages can easily work with more than one student. Some pages use the Notebook 11 Activity Builder feature. If you are using Notebook 10, these pages will not have the disappearing properties. You may still use them, but they just won’t have that “cool” factor!! In that case, just have the students move the items to the correct answer. . No problem!

Practice the Musical Adventures & Assessments !

Before using this SMART Notebook collection with children, I encourage you to go through each page carefully to see how it is designed and avoid presenting it “on the fly!” With preparation, I think you will have the perfect way to present the information and explain what is being asked of your students. I purposely did not write down every instruction I would give my students… I  find that the fewer words I use, the better! Kids are smart, and they get it quicker than we do!

Many uses for these Musical Adventures & Assessments

It would be ideal if  students were able to access this file on a 1:1 computer. Without the SMART iPad app, using this SMART Notebook lesson will require some creativity on  the part of  the teacher in a 1:1 iPad classroom. As long as I make it a game and keep the pace moving, my students waiting for a turn at the SMARTBoard, are usually just as involved in the learning activity. I have found that I can have my students using an app like EduCreations or Explain Everything and keep them busy illustrating the concept being assessed while the single student is at the SMARTBoard. It has been my experience that the children are so excited about interacting with the activity that they are right around the SMARTBoard the whole time ever without asking. Take a look at the video below to get a feel for how it all works in the classroom.

This file, 18 SMARTBoard Musical Adventures and Assessments lesson, is now available  in my Teachers Pay Teachers store. My goal is to create  excellent SMARTBoard activities that totally engage the children so they won’t even know they are being assessed!

I live for that giggle that comes with a twinkle in the eyes of my toughest boys and snootiest girls! I know you do too!

  1. Thanks for all your contributions to the SMARTboard equipped music classroom. Whenever I see a good SMARTboard file I’m not surprised when I see your name attached!

  2. Your smartboard files look fantastic! However I am having difficulty with them. Perhaps you could point out what I am doing wrong. I have downloaded the files using the red link. The files are downloaded as a .zip file and when I extract them they don’t open with SMART notebook 11.
    Thanks for sharing your wisdom

  3. Angela, I just sent you an invite to my shared DropBox folder. You will have direct access to my files and should be able to download them from there with no problem. This DropBox link seems to solve download issues. Please confirm if you are successful or not. Thanks! ~Cherie

  8. Cheryl, I just sent you an invite to my Shared DropBox folder. You should be able to download it from there. Let me know if that doesn’t work. – Cherie

  9. Hello Cherie,

Thank you so much for your delightful website! I love it! I was wondering something? My classroom isn’t “SMARTboard” equipped, I do have an interactive whiteboard, but I am very new (I just received it last week!) and I was curious if there is a way to use the lessons you’ve created even if I don’t have the SMART board software? Thank you for even a shove in the right direction! 🙂

  10. Nell, Thanks for the kind words! I can’t say for sure if you will be able to use these files. I know that Promethean boards can convert SMART Notebook software and make it work, but I can’t say about any other IWB. Why don’t you tell me which one you have and we’ll try to figure out if we can convert these files some way for you to use them. You could contact the company / support for your new IWB and see if they have a converter for SMART software.

You could open these files in Notebook Express, a downloadable mini version of SMART Notebook software. IF you downloaded them and kinda looked through each file, you could get ideas and create something similar on your new board. I can export these files as PDF files which would give you the background images and you could create the interactive pieces on top of that.

    Let me hear from you!!

  11. Hey Cherie!

Well, thank you so much, bless your heart for your quick response! Our school is using a software called WizTeach? It’s actually out of the UK, I guess??? I did attempt to open a SMART file with their software and had no luck. Upon a little further research, I found out that we have, um, a few calls into them for bugs with the software, so I’m gonna add this one to the list. 🙂

I downloaded SMART Notebook express software and I opened the files and they looked just fine to me on my laptop, so when I get into work tomorrow, I’m gonna see if they will work okay with my IWB system. I know it might not be quite the same since I don’t have the whole SMART board set up, but at this point, any technology is WAY BETTER than nothing! 🙂 Thanks for being willing to help me, I surely appreciate it! 🙂

  12. Thanks for sharing your passion. Just starting to integrate all of this. Planning on stealing lots of ideas!

  13. Thank you, Alison! Check back in with me in a week and let me know how it goes. There are a couple of pages that I think might be too difficult, but if you know what is being asked, you can make it work. For example, the Middle C page… I just have my kids find 5 or 6 and move on. Otherwise, it takes too long. I just sent you an invite to my shared DropBox folder.

    Enjoy!!

  18. Hi Cherie! Love and use your stuff! Thank you! I also cannot get the read link to work. Can you help me please?

  19. Hi Cherie,
I love reading all of your posts and love your enthusiasm! As a ten year veteran music teacher, I am learning a lot of new ways about teaching using smart boards. Sadly no training has been offered, so I spend hours scouting out new ideas. I teach JK-Gr. 8 and am always looking for new ideas, so thank you for your great links and ideas! I was unable to find any link to download your 18 assessments and would love to add them to my collection! Please send me the link asap! Thanks so much and Happy new Year! (do you have any New Year lessons?).

    All the best for 2013
