Valentine Musical Intervals: The 4th, The 6th, and a Heart Attack

Perfect for February, here is a fun SMARTBoard activity to teach the musical intervals of a 4th and a 6th. “Valentine Musical Intervals: The 4th, The 6th, and a Heart Attack” will definitely make a musical memory! This lesson is filled with interactive listening and active learning.

2 Musical Love Notes: the 4th and the 6th

These intervals are identified as “Love Notes” by associating them with two familiar songs: “Here Comes the Bride,” and “My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean.” In this SMARTNotebook lesson playing up on these 2 musical love notes, students sing-a-long and move to “My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean,” and complete with scarves as veils, the girls enjoy the slow walk as a bride during “Here Comes the Bride.”

Tell the Love Story

Introduce the songs by telling a little of the story of Wagner’s opera, “Lohengrin” and “My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean.” Here is the history of the “Bridal March,” but you will definitely need to leave out most of the details. The origin of “My Bonnie” is discussed here.

Interactive Listening and Active Learning

In this SMARTNotebook file, students interact with the musical examples on the SMARTBoard. Using the Activity Builder, students can check their answers as they identify the interval heard. Through constant association with Bonnie on the ship and the funny bride and groom, children practice recognizing the two love note intervals in many ways. Heart Attack Time

I think all memorable learning involves an element of surprise. The culminating activity in this SMARTNotebook lesson involves rapid recognition of the 4th and 6th musical intervals in “My Bonnie,” and “Here Comes the Bride.” For fun, a random heart attack occurs.

There are no boring drills or dictation in this activity. The interactive SMARTBoard enables my students to learn by listening AND doing. This lesson is the perfect introduction to writing or singing these intervals and/or recognizing them in the musical score.
